Shirley J. Block, age 88 of Eagle Lake, died on Monday, October 5, 2009 at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Mankato. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 10th, at 11:00 a.m. at Arnoldt-McRaith Funeral Home in Janesville, with Chaplain Jim Dye officiating. Interment will be in Tivoli Cemetery, Mankato Township. Visitation will be held on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Arnoldt-McRaith Funeral Home in Janesville, and will continue on Saturday morning for one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Shirley Josephine was born on October 29, 1920 in Ellington Township, Palo Alto County, IA, to Joseph and Fern (Feaster) Schwint. She graduated from Mallard High School in 1941 and went on to attend Mankato Commercial College. Shirley was employed by Hubbard Milling in Mankato for several years. On April 29, 1946 she was united in marriage to Henry O. Block at Zion Methodist Church in St. Clair. Shirley and Henry farmed and raised their family in LeRay Township. For many years she was active in 4-H with her children. She enjoyed being in the Bell Tone Choir and Card Club at Hillcrest Health Care Center. Shirley loved time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is survived by her children Howard (Joy) Block of Mora, Gloria (Glenn) Baines of Rhome, TX, Eugene (Patsy) Block of New Richland, Wayne (Karyn) Block of Eagle Lake, Roger Block and special friend Joy of Canon City, CO, Larry Block of Mapleton, and Albert (Cathy) Block of Mankato; by 19 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren; by her sisters Iva Banwart of West Bend, IA, Verdell Sanders of Stuart, IA, Laurabell (Frank) Fliss of Spirit Lake, IA; by many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband Henry on June 29, 1992, her two son''s Gilbert on July 17, 1956 and James on January 4, 1957; her grandson Daniel Block on August 26, 2002; her sister Lola Schwint of Old Ham, SD.
