Lawrence M. Atkin March 16, 1938 - May 18, 2013

Lawrence (Larry) Myron Atkin, age 75 of Faribault, died Saturday, May 18, 2013 at the District One Hospital in Faribault following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the Cathedral of Our Merciful Saviour in Faribault with The Very Reverend James C. Zotalis, Dean of the Cathedral officiating. Interment will be held at the Meadow Ridge Memorial Park, Faribault.

Visitation will be held at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home & Crematory of Faribault on Friday from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday for one hour prior to services at the funeral home. The Faribault Masonic Lodge #9 A.F.&A.M. will conduct a memorial service on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m.

Lawrence M. the son of Louis D. & Josephine C. (Thomas) Atkin was born on March 16, 1938 in Faribault. He was a member of the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and also in DeMolay growing up. He graduated from Faribault Senior High School with the Class of 1957. After serving in the Army he attended Chicago Vocational School in Minneapolis, graduating in the field of Mechanical drawing.

Associations he was in or held office in were: President of N.A.P.E. #5 (National Association of Power Engineers), Master of Faribault Masonic Lodge #9 A.F.&A.M., Member of Tyran Chapter #6 R.A.M., & Member of Northfield Council #12 R.&S.M., Past Commander of Faribault Commandry #8 K.T., President of Cannon Valley Shrine Club (Osman Shrine), Member of the Osman Shrine Temple St. Paul, President of Masonic Building Association Faribault. He was also Vice President of the State Union of Power Engineers Local 70. President of Faribault 50 and over singles club, Member of Faribault Aerie 1460 Fraternal Order of Eagles & Chaplain of the Eagles REAC. President of the Faribault Bowling Association and served as the chairperson for the Cathedral of Our Merciful Saviour 150th Anniversary. He was appointed to the Heritage Preservation Commission for downtown historic preservation.

In 1990 he won the Minnesota Quality award for going the extra mile from the Council For Quality that was presented to him by former Governor Rudy Perpich. In 2012 he received the Hiram Award from the Grand Lodge Of Masons of Minnesota, Faribault Lodge #9, the highest award given to a Mason for the work he has done for The Lodge.

He coached elementary school in flag football & basketball and also softball and track, winning several championships. He also coached teen league softball, boys and girls, winning state championships several times. He also coached the Senior and Junior Bowling for kids. He loved bowling and golf and also loved coaching kids. He was responsible for restarting DeMolay and was a Chapter Dad for 20 years.

He worked for the schools in Faribault for many years and later sold cars for R.C. Bliss Ford and later for Dokmo Ford in Northfield, where he retired from. After his divorce he moved back to Faribault, living at Golden Meadows.

He is survived by his brother Eugene (Carolyn) Atkin of Chicago, IL, his sister Rose Marie (James) Oswald of Princeton, MN and by several nieces and nephews and by a very special friend, Jessica Mortensen and her son Blake Syharath.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Lawrence had a great love for God and would do anything for you if he could.
