JOHN WILLIAM SCHAAL, age 83 of Waseca died on Thursday, July 6, 2017 at the Oaklawn Rehabilitation Center in Mankato.

Born on October 14, 1933 in DeWitt, Iowa, he was the son of William F. and Helen Mae (Siver) Schaal. He graduated from Waterville High School in 1952 and attended Mankato State. John served in the U.S. Marines from 1952 until his honorable discharge in 1955. He married Lila Goemann on June 14, 1959 at St. John Lutheran Church in Walters, Minnesota. John was employed with Birds Eye in Waseca for over 40 years. He also drove school bus for Clemons Bus Service. John enjoyed world travel, hunting, fishing, gardening and photography. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Waseca, served with the Waseca Fire Department and Rescue Squad for 21 years and was a life member of the Waseca VFW.
John is survived by his wife, Lila of Waseca; one daughter, Leah (Drew) Foell of Rochester; three grandchildren, Benjamin, Luke and Josephine Foell all of Rochester. He is also survived by one brother, Alfred (Betty) Schaal of Waseca; sister-in-law, Genevieve Kedrovsky of Edina; brother-in-law, Ronald (Betti) Goemann of Ft. Myers, FL; sister-in-law, Alice Goemann of Bricelyn; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Geneva Philipp; brothers-in-law, Orville Goemann, Frank Philipp and Vlad Kedrovsky; and sister-in-law, Mildred (Gene) Steinhauer.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Waseca, with Rev. David Baumgarn officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour before the service at the church on Thursday. Interment will follow at Woodville Cemetery in Waseca.
