Duane Doran Fuhrman was born on December 31, 1929, to Carl and Alice (Briggs) Fuhrman in Strawberry Point, Iowa. Duane attended Lamont Public Schools, graduating at the age of 16. He continued his education, first at Upper Iowa and later received his Bachelors Degree from Iowa State Teachers College. Following his education, Duane began teaching at the age of 19, before enlisting into the United States Army on February 8, 1952 and proudly served his country until being honorably discharged on January 21, 1954. Duane continued to serve his country by joining the National Guard. After serving in the United States Army, Duane went on to receive his Masters Degree in Administration at the University of Iowa. He taught as a Junior High Principal at Oelwein Public School, Guidance Counselor at Guttenberg Public School and Garnavillo Public School before taking a position in the fall of 1966 as Superintendent at Eastern Allamakee Community School in Lansing. He continued to work as the Superintendent until retiring in 1981.
It was in Lansing where he met the love of his life, Mary Faith Scott. They were united in marriage on July 8, 1967, at St. Johns Episcopal Church in Janesville. Together they made their home in Lansing before retiring to Tempe, Arizona where they lived for 10 years and later moved back to Minnesota, and built a home on Lake Francis. They continued to spend their winters in Arizona. In retirement Duane and Mary enjoyed traveling throughout the country, visiting every state in the union except for Hawaii. Together they shared 41 wonderful years of marriage before Mary passed away on April 26, 2009. Duane was a member of the Elysian American Legion Post 311. He enjoyed working on projects in his yard, was a car aficionado, and the stock market was a very important part of his life. Duane was proud of the life he lived, often saying, "I lived a wonderful life and have no regrets". Most importantly, Duane loved happy hour, cocktails and peanuts. He will be dearly missed.
