ROY CLIFFORD “RED” MYERS, age 94 of Waseca, passed away on Wednesday, January 23, 2008, at Homestead Hospice House in Owatonna.
Born in Waseca on January 26, 1913, Red was the son of Harry and Persis (Palmer) Myers. Growing up, he attended Waseca High School where he was involved with the Minnesota High School Glee Club and the National Honor Society. After graduating from high school in 1930, he attended Carlton College where he earned a degree in botany. While at Carlton he was a record-setting baseball player, going 5 for 5 in his very first game, a record that still stands today. He also played baseball for the Southern Minnesota League.
Beginning his career with E.F. Johnson in 1934, Red was hired to sweep the shop and sidewalks. He later retired in 1977 as National Sales Manager with the same company. Red was active in the Waseca community and was honored with the first Outstanding Young Man Gold Key award in the city of Waseca in 1947. He had also served as chairman of the Waseca Charter Commission in 1967.
On February 25, 1937, he married Lois Schafer in Waseca and they shared 52 years together. After Lois passed away in 1989, Red married Betty Montgomery on August 22, 1992. Betty preceded Red in death in 2005. Red enjoyed refinishing furniture, participating with the Waseca Scouting program, volunteering daily at the Waseca Hospital, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Waseca.
Red is survived by one son, Richard (Lynda) Myers of Warroad, MN; one daughter, Paulette (Thomas Devlin) Myers Traver of Oconomowoc, WI; seven grandchildren, Jess (Karen) Myers, Emily Myers, Christina Myers, Rick Myers, Cara (Andrew) Traver Killgore, Ellen (George Nill) Traver, and Luke (Carol Schumacher) Traver; five great-grandchildren, Noah Myers, Jakob Myers, Julia Myers, Drew Killgore, and Noah Killgore; as well as several nieces and nephews; and his dog and best friend, Patsy. He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, one brother-Glen Myers, and one sister-Marion Melin.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2008 from 4-7 PM at the Kinder-Dennis Home for Funerals in Waseca, and will continue for one hour before services at the church on Sunday.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Sunday, January 27, 2008, at Grace Lutheran Church in Waseca with Rev. Roger Haug officiating. Burial will follow at Woodville Cemetery in Waseca. |
