Austin H. McClain

HOMER “AUSTIN” MCCLAIN, age 91 of Waseca, Minnesota died on Sunday, July 12, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City, Iowa.

Born on January 31, 1918 in St. Lawrence, South Dakota, he was one of 13 children born to John and Maggie (Anderson) McClain.  Austin graduated from Thompson High School in 1935.  He farmed in several areas in northern Iowa until 1983.  On January 19, 1983, Austin was united in marriage to Kay Mariska at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waseca, MN.  He enjoyed traveling and made many trips to Hawaii.

He is survived by two sisters, Wilma Harang and Blanche (Kermit) Grunhovd both of Lake Mills, IA and many nieces and nephews.  He is also survived by two stepsons, Mark (Kathy) Mariska and their children Mark Jr., Meghan, Matt, and Mike of Stamford, CT and James (Joy) Mariska of Billings, MT; and Cora (Steve) Sokolowski of Hernando, FL who adopted Austin as her dad.  He was preceded in death by his parents, wife-Kay, four brothers-Bill, Johnnie, Andrew and George, and six sisters-Eva Kluver, Margaret Johnson, Beulah Brue, Ethel Waage, Velma Halverson, and Velva Bang Miller.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at 2:00 PM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, located at 1001 9th Avenue SE, in Waseca.  Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Waseca.  Visitation will be held on Saturday from 12:30 PM until the time of services at the church.  Kinder-Dennis Home for Funerals in Waseca is handling arrangements.
